Delivering better outcomes that cost less in children’s services
There has never been a more challenging time to work in children’s services – but despite that, positive change is still happening across the sector.
Our new short report highlights how – in partnership with a group of forward-thinking councils – we have been able to positively influence local children’s services systems to help ensure that scarce resources are going to the right children at the right time.
The report contains three case studies covering looked after children, High Needs and Children’s Services improvement. (High Needs covers children with special educational needs and disabilities, children in alternative educational provision, and children who have been excluded from school.)
Examples of the impact described in the case studies include:
reduction in the number of new EHCPs (Lincolnshire)
reduction in forecast spend over 12 months (Lincolnshire: based on current trajectories)
overall reduction in ALL needs for 950 children in care in Hertfordshire
in ‘good savings’ delivered through Valuing Care (Oxfordshire, Norfolk, Stockton
time taken to turn around key improvement indicators (North East Lincolnshire)
of costs avoided in 2020 (Stockton: expected to be an annual saving)
The report explains how this impact was achieved, and how it is possible to influence the complex systems that Directors of Children’s Services work within.
