IWD 2021: Celebrating Ashager Araro

Henrietta Curzon

Ashager Araro is a prominent Ethiopian Israeli antiracism activist who immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia under the Israeli Defence Forces’ Operation Solomon when she was an infant. As a black Jewish feminist and a fantastic story teller she actively promotes awareness of intersectionality through education. She tells the story of her culture and identity in an authentic way, to connect to people and help change hearts and minds. The meaning of her name, Ashager, in Amharic is ‘to go forward from something bad to something good’ and this drives her commitment to breaking down gender stereotypes and cultural barriers.
