IWD 2021: Celebrating Jacinda Ardern

Ebony Hughes

For International Women’s Day 2021, I’d like to celebrate Jacinda Ardern. As New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda’s response to the pandemic was exceptional – as well as delaying the spread of the virus, she also took a voluntary 20% pay cut to close the pay gap between herself and those affected by Covid pay cuts.

As an international leader, Jacinda has shown great humanity and empathy, alongside clear strength and resolve. She has shown women all over the world what they can achieve, and continuously strives to make that happen – from launching programmes in schools to provide free period products so that girls don’t miss school; to seeking to increase female representation in her national parliament; to showing world leaders how it can be done.

Jacinda is a true leader: she embraces diversity, always appears to be in control, and responds quickly and with compassion. She is someone who inspires me and who I feel is forging the way to creating a more inclusive world.
