IMPOWER’s Heroes of 2022: Dr Muhammad Imran Sabir, Lincolnshire

Michael Wyatt

As the Clinical Lead for Acute Medicine in United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust, Dr Muhammad Imran Sabir plays a crucial role in the delivery of high-quality care for medical patients and ensuring flow throughout the hospital sites by getting people home as soon as medically safe to do so.

Dr Sabir was a key change leader throughout IMPOWER’s work with medical assessment units in ULHT, particularly within Lincoln Hospital. The aim was, as often is, to deliver more daily discharges out of the wards back into the community to relieve pressure on the hospital. To do this, Dr Sabir championed the positive behaviours and streamlined processes IMPOWER supported the wards to embed. This included robust use of Criteria to Reside, collaborative discharge planning, and regular consideration of maximising outpatient diagnostics and follow ups.

Working on small but powerful behavioural changes to drive sustainable improvement requires a shift in culture. Culture shifts such as these require strong but patient leadership, which is what Dr Sabir provides daily. Working in partnership with Dr Sabir enabled significant impact in Lincolnshire, increasing daily discharge numbers out of the medical assessment ward back into the community during a time of immense pressure for the hospital.

Oh, and did we mention he rocks the scrubs and gilet look…! A true believer in continuous and sustainable improvement to deliver the best outcomes for patients and the hospital – Dr Sabir will continue to deliver what is best for Lincolnshire.
