Black History Month 2021: Joy Buolamwini

Sandra Ositelu

Joy Buolamwini is a MIT Media Lab Researcher and is in Netflix’s documentary “Coded Bias”. Joy’s initial MIT thesis highlighted the racial and gender bias of face recognition technology, bringing attention to this really important issue with terrible implications in our everyday lives, including in technology used in policing in the UK, US and big tech companies. Her research and activism has helped large institutions, such as World Economic Forum and the United Nations, understand the wider impact and has begun influencing change – including in legislation! Joy has founded the Algorithmic Justice League, with the vision to enable more equability and accountability in technology, and serves on the Global Tech Panel to advise world leaders and leaders in tech on ways to reduce the harms of artificial technology.
