Black History Month 2020: Olive Morris

Olive Morris lived in Brixton and became a local activist, protesting against police brutality and advocating for community spaces within the local area.

My influential person for Black History Month is Olive Morris. I first learnt about her while working at my first job in Olive Morris House, a building owned by Lambeth Council and dedicated to her after passing away at the age of 27. Olive Morris lived in Brixton and became a local activist, protesting against police brutality and advocating for community spaces within the local area. She co-founded the Brixton Black Women’s Group in 1974, and whilst at Manchester University she contributed to the formation of the Black Women’s Mutual Aid and the Manchester Black Women’s Co-op. She always fought for her community and her beliefs, and has had a strong lasting impact on culture within Brixton.
