Local councils don't just create policies; they deliver services that have a direct impact on all our lives. Local government spending accounts for up to a quarter of GDP, and local authorities employ nearly two million people in the UK.
Among other things, local government directly looks after over 70,000 children. It deals with 6,000 adoptions a year. It is responsible for the education of over seven million school-age students, and manages four million council houses. Councils keep every one of our streets clean.
And the sector is undergoing an enormous, exciting period of change. The e-government agenda is transforming the ways councils interact with citizens, and councils are coming to grips with terms such as "localism" and "personalisation". At the same time, local government is under severe budget constraints. At iMPOWER, we need to be creative and innovative to help our clients through these opportunities and challenges.
Yes, local authorities can be resistant to change. This means we have to be convincing when making our case, and patient. But councils reward commitment and loyalty. Most of our work at iMPOWER is with repeat clients who know they can expect a certain level of quality and expertise.
If working in such an environment doesn't appeal; if your bent is more towards helping a financial services company outsource automated telephone systems to Mumbai — then working for us is almost certainly not for you. But if you want to work for an organisation that supports the transformation of councils and thereby indirectly makes a difference to:
- the way our children are educated and looked after
- the regeneration of the most deprived areas of our country
- the protection of our environment
- the development of sustainable thriving communities
- the support provided to vulnerable members of our society
- the elimination of waste and unnecessary bureaucracy so that resources can be channeled to the right areas
- delivering public services in a meaningful, efficient, personal joined up manner
—— then iMPOWER would love to hear from you.
